Caring for your Bertleys

Suede Care

1. Brush Away Dirt

  • Use a suede brush (or a soft toothbrush if you don’t have one).

  • Brush gently in one direction to lift dirt and restore the nap (the soft texture).

2. Treat Stains

  • Dry stains: Use a suede eraser (or a clean pencil eraser) to rub them out.

  • Wet stains: Blot (don’t rub) with a dry cloth, then let them air dry before brushing.

  • Water stains: Lightly dampen the whole boot with a clean sponge, then let dry naturally. This prevents water rings.

3. Remove Oil or Grease Marks

  • Sprinkle cornstarch or talcum powder on the spot.

  • Leave overnight to absorb the oil.

  • Brush off gently in the morning.

4. Refresh the Nap

  • After cleaning, brush in different directions to lift and even out the nap.

  • For stubborn flat areas, hold the boot over gentle steam (like from a kettle) for a few seconds, then brush.

5. Protect

  • Spray with a suede protector to shield against water and stains.

  • Always apply protector when boots are clean and dry.

Extra Tips:

  • Never soak suede in water or use regular soap/leather cleaner.

  • Store in a cool, dry place with shoe trees or newspaper stuffing to hold their shape.

  • Clean often but gently. Suede scuffs easily.
